You book a house wash expecting cleaner walls, eaves and windows. Then you look at the mesh covering the glass and wonder: will the cleaner be able to reach behind it?
Not automatically. House washing and flyscreens need a clear discussion about access. Our standard house wash does not include removing flyscreens or security screens. A basic exterior window scrub is also a different scope from a dedicated window clean.
That does not mean you need to pull every screen out before we arrive. It means we should agree on what you want cleaned, what can be reached and who is arranging any screen removal before the booking.
Think of each window as several separate surfaces
From inside the house, it can look like one dirty window. Outside, there may be mesh, a screen frame, security bars, glass, window frames and tracks. Each part has its own access and condition to consider.
Washing the outside face of a screen is different from cleaning glass behind it. Likewise, rinsing around an exterior frame does not mean dirt inside a sliding track or on the room-facing glass has been removed.
Before booking exterior house washing, tell us what bothers you most. Is it dusty mesh, marks on the outside glass, cobwebs around the frame or grime in the track? Naming the surface makes the quote much clearer.

Why washing through the mesh is not the same as direct access
A fitted screen sits between the cleaner and the glass. Depending on the design, it can prevent a brush or other suitable window-cleaning tool from reaching the pane properly. A rinse through the mesh is not equivalent to cleaning an exposed pane.
It can also be difficult to judge marks through a dirty screen. Dust on the mesh, grime on the outside glass and marks on the inside glass may overlap in your view from the room.
If you want a clearer view after the wash, tell us that at the quoting stage. We can discuss whether the accessible exterior work will address the problem or whether you should include a dedicated window-cleaning service.
Should you remove your flyscreens before a house wash?
Only arrange removal after the scope has been discussed. Some insect screens are designed to be removed by the owner, while fitted security screens and other products may need their installer or another suitable person.
We do not remove flyscreens or security screens as part of our standard house wash. If glass behind removable screens is to be included, agree beforehand who will remove them, where they will be kept and who will refit them.
Do not force a frame, undo a security fitting or attempt an awkward high window simply to prepare for cleaning. Follow the product instructions and ask the installer when you are unsure. Tell us about loose mesh, damaged clips or a frame that already sticks.
If screens stay fitted, the quote should reflect that access limitation. You can still discuss cleaning the accessible exterior surfaces without assuming every part behind the mesh will receive the same finish.
Security screens need the right care for their product
A lightweight insect screen and a coated security screen are not interchangeable. The mesh, frame, finish and hardware may have different care instructions.
For example, Crimsafe’s care guidance explains that mesh can collect salt, moisture and airborne impurities. Its maintenance advice relates to its own products. Other brands should be checked against their own instructions.
This matters around coastal Mackay homes, where customers may notice recurring deposits on exposed screens. Let us know the brand if you know it, and share any care information you received at installation. Do not assume that a stronger cleaning product or more pressure is the answer.

What about spots, stains and cloudy glass?
Not every cloudy view comes from ordinary surface dirt. Marks may be on the room-facing glass, behind a fixed screen or in a damaged part of the window. Some deposits need separate assessment, and cleaning cannot repair scratched glass or failed components.
Point out the marks before work begins. A close photo and a wider photo of the whole window are more useful together than a photo of the glass alone.
Also clarify whether your quote includes exterior glass only, frames, tracks or another specific area. A general house wash should not be mistaken for a detailed clean of every window component inside and out.
A simple house washing and flyscreens checklist
When sending your enquiry, include these details:
- Which windows or doors have insect screens or security screens.
- Whether the screens are fixed or designed to be removable.
- Whether your main concern is the mesh, glass, frames or tracks.
- Any known damage, loose fittings or leaks.
- Whether you want a basic exterior wash or a separate window-cleaning quote.
Keep the windows and doors behind screens closed for the wash, and tell us if they will not close properly. Mesh is not a watertight barrier. Our guide to water entry during house washing explains that separate preparation issue.
Common questions before booking
Are flyscreens included in a house wash?
Accessible screens can be discussed as part of the agreed exterior scope. Screen removal is not part of our standard house wash. Ask us to state which surfaces are included.
Can you guarantee spotless glass behind a fixed screen?
No. A fitted screen can limit direct access, and the type and location of the marks also matter. We will discuss the accessible areas and the likely limits before agreeing on the work.
Does house washing include interior window tracks?
Do not assume it does. Interior tracks, room-facing glass and detailed window cleaning should be named separately if you want them assessed or included in a quote.
Can I leave the screens in place?
Yes, but tell us what result you want so the scope reflects the available access. You do not need to remove every screen automatically before a house wash.
